When to choose a plastic pallet

A plastic pallet pays off wherever the load carrier circulates in a closed loop and wherever hygiene and repeatability matter:

• Food, meat, pharmaceutical, cosmetics — food-contact certificate, washing and disinfection at high temperature, no risk of mould, splinters or foreign bodies.
• Automated warehouses (AS/RS, conveyors, wrappers) — precise, constant dimensions (1200×800, 1200×1000) and no protruding nails prevent jams.
• Cold stores and freezers — HDPE does not absorb water and does not crumble at sub-zero temperatures.
• Export outside the EU — no ISPM 15 requirement shortens customs clearance and eliminates fumigation cost.
• Returnable circulation and internal logistics — low, repeatable weight lowers transport costs and improves workplace safety.

When wood can be better

A wooden pallet makes sense for one-way, non-returnable shipping, on a very low unit budget and for loads with extreme point mass, where maximum load capacity at the lowest purchase price matters and the carrier does not come back anyway.

Load capacity — how to read the parameters

Pallet load capacity is given in three values that must not be confused:

• Static — the maximum load of a pallet standing on a level surface.
• Dynamic — the load while being moved by a forklift/pallet truck.
• On racking (shelf) — the load of a pallet supported only at the beam edges; the lowest value and decisive for high storage.

Life-cycle cost (TCO) — why plastic wins in circulation

Purchase price is only part of the bill. A wooden pallet in intensive circulation is destroyed after a few to a dozen cycles, generating costs of replacement, repairs, disposal and downtime. An HDPE plastic pallet goes through hundreds of cycles without losing parameters. Dividing the cost by the number of rotations, the cost per cycle of a plastic carrier is lower, plus savings on hygiene and transport.

Export: ISPM 15 and fumigation

Wooden packaging in trade outside the EU is subject to the ISPM 15 standard — it requires heat treatment (HT) or fumigation and an IPPC mark. Non-compliance means the shipment is held or destroyed at the border. Plastic pallets are exempt from this requirement — they are not a wood-based material, so they need no fumigation or phytosanitary certificate.

Summary

For companies that keep carriers in circulation, care about hygiene or export outside the EU, a plastic pallet means lower total cost and less risk.
