Plastic Drums and Spill Containment Trays: The Perfect Duo for Safe Liquid Storage
Published on: 18-05-2026
Plastic Drums – the Versatile Workhorses of the Warehouse
Modern transport and storage operations are hard to imagine without plastic drums. They have replaced heavy, corrosion-prone metal drums in many areas. Their secret lies in the material – they are usually made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
The greatest advantages of HDPE drums:
- Chemical resistance: Unaffected by acids, alkalis, and petroleum-based products.
- Lightweight and durable: Easy to handle and highly resistant to impacts and cracks.
- Food-grade certification: Many models are approved for storing drinking water, food concentrates, and fermented products.
- Construction variety: Wide-mouth drums (with lid and metal clamp) for solids and thick materials, as well as narrow-mouth drums (L-ring) designed for liquids.
Spill Containment Trays – Your Operational Insurance Policy
Even the best drum can be damaged – a moment of carelessness during forklift transport or a loose valve is enough. This is where the spill containment tray comes in.
Its job is simple: capture every drop that escapes uncontrolled from the container.
How to choose the right spill containment tray?
- Capacity matters: The golden rule states that the tray should hold at least 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total volume of all stored liquids.
- Material matched to content: Plastic trays (HDPE) are excellent for acids and bases. Steel trays (galvanized) work better for flammable substances and oils.
- Grating: A tray with a grate (plastic or steel) allows stable drum placement and channels any leaking liquid to the bottom of the tray.
Why are they the ideal duo?
- Employee safety: Dry and clean workstations reduce the risk of slipping and eliminate contact with toxic or corrosive substances.
- Environmental and financial protection: The cost of a spill tray is a fraction of what you would pay for contaminated soil remediation or regulatory fines.
- Logistics: Many spill containment trays are designed to be easily moved with pallet trucks, creating mobile, safe liquid dispensing stations.
Whether you run a large chemical plant, an auto repair shop, or simply want to safely store supplies at home – plastic drums paired with spill containment trays are a standard you should not compromise on.
