How to select and safely use spill trays in a warehouse and production plant?
Published on: 05-11-2025
Why are spill trays necessary?
Spill trays are used to secure containers with hazardous liquids – oils, fuels, chemicals or corrosive substances. Their task is to stop leaks and prevent liquids from reaching the ground.
Legal requirements and safety
In accordance with health and safety and environmental protection regulations (including the 2011 Regulation of the Minister of Economy), every company storing hazardous substances must have safety measures in place in the form of spill containment trays or other retention systems.
This is not only an obligation, but also an investment in the safety of employees and the environment.
How to choose a spill tray for a specific type of substance?
The choice of the right spill tray depends on what you store in it and the conditions in which you work.
1. Plastic trays – for chemicals, oils and fuels
made of polyethylene (PE-HD) – resistant to corrosion and most chemicals,
ideal for chemical warehouses, workshops, laboratories,
lightweight and easy to clean,
available in various sizes – from compact models for a single barrel to large platforms for IBC containers.
2. Metal trays – for heavier applications
made of galvanised or painted steel,
resistant to mechanical damage and high temperatures,
recommended for industry, car workshops, production plants,
often equipped with a steel grid and holes for draining liquids.
How to calculate the capacity of a spill tray?
According to safety rules, a spill tray should have a capacity of at least:
110% of the volume of the largest container placed on it, or
25% of the total volume of all containers, if there are more of them.
Where to place a spill tray?
Under racks or containers with liquids – in areas at risk of leakage,
Near stations where substances are poured or transferred,
On a level, stable surface, away from sources of fire and traffic areas,
In warehouses with high goods turnover – it is worth using modular spill containment kits that can be combined into larger protective areas.
Maintenance and cleaning of spill containment traysAlthough simple in design, a spill tray requires regular inspection:
Empty it after each spill.
Clean it with a detergent suitable for the type of liquid (e.g. oil detergent).
Check the grating and seals – they must not be corroded or cracked.
Avoid storing plastic models in sunny places.
What are the benefits of using spill trays?
Environmental protection and regulatory compliance
Reduced risk of accidents in the workplace
Easier to keep the warehouse tidy
Longer service life of equipment and storage racks
Summary
Spill trays are a simple but essential piece of equipment in any facility that works with liquids. A well-chosen spill tray means safety, compliance with standards and peace of mind during inspections.
