Special plastic pallets - what is worth knowing about them?

Published on: 25-10-2024

Why choose specialty plastic pallets?
  • Standard plastic pallets are great for general use, but for more demanding specialised applications there is a need for products that meet additional requirements, such as resistance to chemicals, higher loads or to fit specific transport sizes.
  • Advantages of speciality plastic pallets:
  • Resistance to external factors - plastic pallets are resistant to moisture, corrosion and mould, making them ideal for moisture-prone environments.
  • Ease of disinfection - they are suitable for pressure washing and are resistant to disinfectants, which is important in industries such as pharmaceuticals and food.
  • Lower weight - the weight of plastic pallets is often lower than their wooden counterparts, making them easier to handle and reducing transport costs.
  • Adherence to industry norms and standards - some special pallets are designed to meet GMP or HACCP requirements.

Types of special plastic pallets
There are several types of special plastic pallets, which are distinguished by their technical characteristics. It is worth learning about their diversity and applications in order to choose a product that perfectly meets your specific requirements.
a) ESD pallets (Electrostatic Discharge)
ESD pallets are made of antistatic materials, which protects the products stored on them from damage caused by electrostatic discharge. They are ideal for the electronics industry and wherever materials sensitive to static electricity are stored.
b) Hygienic pallets
Hygienic plastic pallets are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. They are characterised by a smooth surface and a special design that minimises the risk of retaining contaminants. They can be sterilised and are often manufactured from food approved plastics.
c) Chemical-resistant pallets
Thanks to the use of special plastics, chemically resistant pallets can withstand contact with various chemicals, acids or aggressive substances. They are often used in the chemical industry and in places where substances that can cause corrosion are stored and transported.
d) Heavy-duty pallets
Heavy-duty pallets are designed for heavy loads and intensive use. They are used in heavy industry logistics, warehouses and distribution centres. Special reinforcing ribs and robust construction mean that they can carry up to several tonnes of goods.
e) Custom pallets
Custom pallets are manufactured to order, in specific sizes and configurations to suit individual customer requirements. They can have special markings, built-in RFID modules for tracking and even solutions to provide thermal insulation for temperature-sensitive products.

Use of special plastic pallets
Choosing the right pallet depends largely on the specific industry and the products that will be stored on them.
Food industry: Hygienic pallets are ideal for transporting foodstuffs, as they are easy to clean and meet sanitary standards.
Pharmaceutical industry: Medicinal products require specific storage and transport conditions, and plastic pallets allow for their effective disinfection and minimise the risk of contamination.
Chemical industry: Where aggressive substances are handled, chemically resistant pallets are used to ensure durability and safety during storage.
Electronics industry: ESD pallets protect sensitive electronic components from damage by electrostatic discharge.
Sustainability and special plastic pallets
Modern plastic pallets can be manufactured from recycled materials and are themselves fully recyclable. Due to their durability and resistance to damage, these pallets have a longer lifespan than wooden pallets, resulting in less consumption of natural resources. As a result, they are more environmentally friendly products, especially when compared to classic disposable pallets.

What should I consider when choosing a special plastic pallet?
Choosing the right pallet depends on several key factors:
Weight of the load - pallets need to be suitable for the weight of the products stored.
Storage conditions - it is worth considering resistance to chemicals, electrostatic discharge or sanitary requirements.

Box pallet or big bag? What to choose for bulk materials

For closed-loop, reusable handling choose a plastic box pallet; for single-use transport of large bulk batches, a big bag. The box pallet is rigid, stackable and washable; the big bag is cheap, light and folds flat when empty.
