Types of Steel and Their Properties

Published on: 09-12-2022

Steel finds its uses in the industrial world. You will also find it in construction, catering and even in medical facilities. Always its alloys contain iron and carbon. However, its characteristics are determined by other elements, metals or non-metallic additives. Thus, you will find a completely different steel in the kitchen or during operations, and one that is designed to withstand industrial conditions. Therefore, what can be added to the basic alloy and what properties does it have?
  • chromium - increases impact strength, in the case of stainless steels adds corrosion resistance, increases strength and hardness;
  • nickel - reduces brittleness threshold, increases strength;
  • silicon - also increases strength and hardness;
  • copper - resists corrosion, has similar properties to pure iron
  • Aluminum - has a deoxidizing effect;
  • manganese - increases abrasion resistance, is resilient
Types of steel
Non-alloy steel, which is characterized by a carbon content of up to 2.11% by total weight. It also contains negligible amounts of other elements. This type of steel accounts for 90% of steel production in general. Subtypes of unalloyed steel:
Low carbon steel, which has only up to 0.3% carbon in its composition. It is one of the most popular steels because it is easy to work with and has flexibility.
Medium-carbon steel consists of 0.3 - 0.6% carbon. This content of this element allows for better heat treatment. It is liked in the automotive and transportation world for the production of car parts and railroad rails.
High-carbon steel is the most resistant to cutting and bending, so it's great for making springs or wires. In its composition you will find from 0.6 to 1% carbon.
Alloy steel, in addition to the basic composition, has other elements added, etc., from a few to several tens of percent. Such admixtures can: change the structure of the alloy, impart other chemical and physical properties, increase hardenability, facilitate heat treatment.

In addition to plastic products, PALETEO also offers specialized products made precisely from steel, mainly stainless steel.

    Box pallet or big bag? What to choose for bulk materials

    For closed-loop, reusable handling choose a plastic box pallet; for single-use transport of large bulk batches, a big bag. The box pallet is rigid, stackable and washable; the big bag is cheap, light and folds flat when empty.

    For food choose an IBC with food-contact approval and a factory-new, clean bottle; for chemicals an IBC with UN/ADR approval and chemical resistance. Approval and bottle history decide the use, not appearance.

    Plastic pallet for warehouse automation: why dimension and repeatability decide

    Automated systems (AS/RS, conveyors, wrappers) require pallets with a repeatable dimension, constant weight and a flat underside — so HDPE plastic pallets outperform wood. No protruding nails or splinters means no line jams.
