In international transport, you often hear the abbreviation ISPM 15. For many companies, this topic is associated with formalities, markings and additional costs. But did you know that if you use plastic pallets, this problem simply does not apply to you?
What is ISPM 15?
ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an international standard designed to protect ecosystems from the invasion of pests carried in wooden transport packaging.
It applies to wooden pallets, crates, spacers and other packaging elements thicker than 6 mm that can carry insect larvae, fungi or other organisms that destroy wood.
ISPM 15 requirements for wood
In order for wooden packaging to cross the borders of many countries, it must be:
Properly treated – most often by heat treatment (HT) or fumigation with methyl bromide (MB).
Cleaned of bark – in accordance with specified limits for bark residue.
Marked with an IPPC stamp – containing the country code, manufacturer number and treatment method.
The absence of such markings may result in the shipment being detained, penalties being imposed or the goods having to be repackaged.
What about plastic pallets?
The good news is that plastic pallets are not subject to ISPM 15.
Why?
They do not contain wood, so they are not a habitat for pests.
They do not require treatment or marking.
They can freely cross borders without the risk of being detained by phytosanitary services.
This means that by using plastic pallets, you can save time, avoid additional costs and simplify export procedures.
Why is plastic sometimes better than wood?
In addition to being exempt from ISPM 15, plastic pallets offer other advantages:
Hygiene – easy to clean, resistant to moisture and chemicals.
Durability – they do not break and do not have nails that could damage the goods.
Fixed dimensions – they do not ‘work’ like wood under the influence of moisture or temperature.
Although their purchase price is higher than that of wooden pallets, they often pay for themselves in international transport thanks to savings in procedures and time.
ISPM 15 is an important standard in global logistics, but it only applies to wooden packaging. If your company ships goods abroad and you want to avoid additional requirements, plastic pallets can be an excellent solution.
Sometimes the simplest decisions – such as choosing the right type of pallet – can significantly improve the transport process.
